How to motivate geeks and manage developers

Once again has Andrei Kouvchinnikov over at dominounlimited found a very interesting article, this time from dominopower. It’s regarding something that many managers are struggeling with everyday, how to attract and motivate the core, supernatural borned geeks that does all that cool stuff in the R&D departements. For example:

  1. Geeks are curious. Let them feed their desire to learn things
  2. Geeks like to be self-sustaining. Let them figure things out on their own.
  3. Geeks are creative even if they don’t know it. Give them a chance.

Even if my geekstatus really has faded the last decade I do agree on many of these things.Another important thing for an organisation to atleast put some light on is how pure techies can be promoted. Too many companies don’t have other ways for promotion than becoming a manager.
