Search engines

I guess most users are using Google these days but it has not always been like that. I remember back in the ninetees when alta-vista was flying over the search index from United States every week. Back then it felt cool and hi-tech that we, in our small country (Sweden) got a local indexing. After AltaVista Yahoo became very popular because they tried to categorize the internet much as a library.

Altavista lost in my opinion mostly because it was so bloated with lots of commercials. It wasn’t too smart when lots of users still where accessing internet with a slow analog modem. Yahoo on the other hand seamed to not focus soo much on the search engine anymore but on all the other services they are providing. Personal pages, mail, groups, forums etc. Much as Google these days.

Today I’m using three search engines:

• Google For the speed and easy UI
• IMDB For the massive content
• WikiPedia For the cool Wikithing and numerous detailed information
