Hi, my name is Joachim and I’m a utility junkie

I admitt, I love utilities on my OS. I’m using or have used all there is, from GUI enhancer, desktop indexing, file managers via screen captures, clipboard manager and virtual desktops. Not seldom am I mixing different drugs utilites to maximize the effect the tools gives me.

Here’s a small subset of apps I’m using daily: gtalk, workrave, FolderShare, G Desktop, clipmate, paint.net, Charles, CygWin, irfanview, JXplorer, Notepad++, Personalbrain.

As everyone as devoted as me in this matter would know it’s impossible to obtain an environment that doesn’t duplicate features. As it goes now I found out that my beloved launchy actually has a competitor in google desktop, why launchy only handles software installed on my system the google Quick Search Box not only allows me to launch software quickly, but also to search the desktop and the internet.

Both applications starts suggesting as soon as I start typing so there’s no difference and because I do want Google Desktop for the mail and local files indexing it seems like an easy decision. Unfortunately launchy has one feature I think I can live without even if it’s very convenient, it’s the ability to re-order the list of suggestions so that the most likely one, based on my earlier searches, comes first. If I in Google Desktop for example types “wor” I will be suggested “wordpresswidgets.wordpress.org”, “Microsoft Word 2003″ and “10-world in my eyes, depeche mode”.

In launchy, as I have configuresd it, I would get the “Wordpad”, “Microsoft Word 2003″ and “Workrave” in that sequence. If I selected “Workrave” the list would be reordered next time and “Workrave” would be the first.

If Google Desktop could do the same it would be an easy battle. Anyway, I can recommend both the softwares, even if I am considering throwing out Launchys alt-tab in favour for Google Desktops Quick-search.
